What happens when a figure turns out to be wrong?

It is held back and checked again. A revised figure replaces the earlier one on the page, the earlier one stays in the record, and articles note any correction.

Every new figure is checked against the history of the same series and against other sources. A figure that falls far outside its history, or that the sources disagree on, is held back and not shown until it has been checked again.

When a publisher revises a figure, the revision replaces the earlier figure on the page. Nothing is deleted: the earlier figure and every automated decision about it are kept in the record.

If a figure used in an article is corrected, the article shows a correction notice. If you think a figure is wrong, write to [email protected] with the page address, and it will be checked against the source.
