What happens to my visitors’ data, and what is retargeting?
The script sets no identifier until a visitor agrees to advertising. A visitor who agreed can be added to Housing Market Ads retargeting audiences, which lets advertisers show them relevant ads. Without consent, nothing is stored.
Retargeting means showing an ad to someone who has already looked at something, such as a property, so that the ads they see are more relevant. The same Housing Market script that shows the ads on your website also feeds the retargeting audiences of Housing Market Ads.
Consent comes first. The script sets no identifier on a visitor, and stores nothing that recognises them, until they have agreed to advertising in your consent banner. A visitor who has not agreed is not added to any audience, and in some countries sees no ad at all.
A visitor who has agreed can be added to Housing Market Ads retargeting audiences, so that advertisers running retargeting campaigns can show them relevant ads. Advertisers receive reports, not the details of individual visitors.
Tell your visitors about this in your own privacy statement and show a consent banner, your own or the built-in one. The publisher terms you accepted in the Publisher app say what is expected of your website; what the law requires in your country is for you and your own adviser to decide, and this answer is practical guidance only.
